Marion Cotillard is the first child of actor, director and teacher, Jean-Claude Cotillard and actress Niseema Theillaud. She was born in Paris on September 30, 1975 and grew up in the Centre-Val de Loire region, in the commune of Orleans.
As a child, due to influences from both, Cotillard, who had taken a break from working in front of and behind the camera, was interested in becoming an entertainer. She began acting in her father’s plays before working in theaters and other television shows in her teens.
Around the age of 17, the young actress appeared in her first English-language role on the series Highlanders. By the time she was 20, she had small roles in films such as The Story of a Boy Who Wanted to Be Kissed (1994) and My Sex Life…or How I Had a Fight (1996).
Cotillard’s first leading role was in the film Chloé, after which she was promoted to a career as a braggart in the Taxi series. For her role in The First Taxi (1998), Cotillard was nominated for a Cesar Award for Most Promising Actress. She went on to act in the romantic drama Furia (1999) and then in the Swiss war film Krieg im Hochland (1999), which won her Best Actress award at the Autrans Film Festival.In 2003, after appearing in more than 13 French films, Marion Cotillard decided to try her hand at Hollywood.
