Darwin Nunez will wear the No 9 shirt at Liverpool, which was vacant following Roberto Firmino’s departure at the end of the season.
Nunez, 24, took the No 27 shirt after joining from Benfica last summer in a deal worth up to €100million (£85m, $112m), having worn the No 9 while at the Portuguese club.

Liverpool said that “fans who have already purchased new 2023-24 home and away jerseys printed with the name ‘Darwin’ and the number ‘27’ will be personally reimbursed by Nunez with a like-for-like exchange for a ‘Darwin 9’ shirt”.
Firmino, meanwhile, has since signed for Saudi Pro League side Al Ahli.
Nunez is the second Liverpool player to change shirt numbers in the off-season, with winger Luis Diaz swapping 23 for 7. That number was available after James Milner’s free transfer to Brighton & Hove Albion.

Liverpool’s previous No 9s include Christian Benteke, Rickie Lambert, Iago Aspas and Andy Carroll.
Nunez enjoyed a decent first season in England, registering 15 goals and four assists in 42 appearances across all competitions.
Liverpool begin their 2023-24 Premier League away against Chelsea on August 13.
